Plzeň begins reconstruction of unique historic filtration building

The city of Plzeň has launched a major two-year reconstruction project for the historic Puech-Chabal filtration building, a unique industrial structure located within the Plzeň waterworks complex. Celebrating its centenary this year, the facility is considered the last remaining site of its kind in the world.

The reconstruction, costing approximately 164 million CZK, aims to preserve the technical and architectural integrity of the 125-meter-long building. The project will focus on restoring the roof shell, including the original steel structure manufactured by Škoda Works, as well as repairing wooden rafters, facades, windows, and doors. The goal is to maintain the industrial spirit with minimal intervention to the original design by architect Hanuš Zápal.

While the building ceased its original filtration function nearly thirty years ago, the site currently hosts fish hatcheries operated by Chabal fish. To prevent disruption to these operations, the construction will proceed in stages, allowing the hatcheries to continue functioning under protective coverings while work moves through the three separate halls.
