Urban and heritage reconstruction in Plzeň

The city of Plzeň is undertaking several significant urban and heritage reconstruction projects.

In Republic Square, the first phase of a 60.5 million CZK renovation is nearing completion. The project introduces new lighting, misting systems, drinking fountains, and the planting of 14 elms. A key component involves converting the western side of the square into a pedestrian zone to encourage cafe and shop activity. While city officials cite high public support for the changes, the National Heritage Institute has raised concerns regarding the loss of traditional granite paving and potential obstructions to views of the St. Bartholomew Cathedral.

Additionally, the city has launched a two-year, 164 million CZK reconstruction of the historic Puech-Chabal filtration building within the Plzeň waterworks. As a unique centenary industrial structure, the project focuses on restoring the roof shell, steel structures, and facades while preserving the original architectural design. To avoid disrupting the fish hatcheries currently operating at the site, construction will be conducted in stages across three separate halls.
