India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi Highlights National Handloom Day

National Handloom Day is observed in India on 7 August to mark the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905. Prime Minister Narendra Modi used the occasion to salute the country’s handloom heritage, calling the sector a pillar of rural empowerment, women‑led development and the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat. He urged citizens, especially youth, to buy handloom products and share “Get Ready With Me” (GRWM) videos on social media to raise awareness and support weavers.

Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse inaugurated the “Saree Shastra” handloom exhibition in New Delhi, showcasing GI‑verified textiles from across the country. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath presented state‑level handloom awards and highlighted the sector’s role in preserving cultural heritage and providing livelihoods. Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan described India’s handloom tradition as a “living legacy.”

The Ministry of Textiles organized the 12th National Handloom Day ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre, with President Droupadi Murmu as chief guest and the presentation of Sant Kabir and National Handloom Awards to outstanding artisans. Across states, officials and political leaders reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthen the handloom ecosystem and encourage public participation through the #NationalHandloomDay campaign.
