PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana reduces electricity bills for Indian households

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a government initiative providing subsidies for solar panel installation, is significantly reducing electricity costs for households across India. Beneficiaries in regions such as Mahoba, Uttar Pradesh, Shirdi, Maharashtra, and Gaya, Bihar, report substantial savings.

In Mahoba, residents have seen monthly bills drop from several thousand rupees to near zero or minimal amounts. In Shirdi, one beneficiary reported receiving a 75,000 rupee subsidy, allowing for the use of electric vehicles and stoves while maintaining low costs. In Gaya, a small business owner installed a 3 kW solar system for approximately 1.99 lakh rupees, receiving a 78,000 rupee subsidy, which resulted in a zero monthly electricity bill despite running multiple appliances.

The scheme offers tiered subsidies based on capacity: a 1 kW installation costs roughly 63,000 rupees with a 30,000 rupee subsidy, while larger systems provide higher production levels, such as 15 units per day for a 3 kW setup.
