PMOS linked to increased dementia and Alzheimer's risk

A new systematic review published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society suggests a link between polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS)—formerly known as PCOS—and an increased risk of dementia and cognitive impairment.

Researchers from the US and Iran indicate that the connection may be driven by metabolic factors rather than the hormonal disorder itself. Specifically, chronic insulin resistance and obesity are identified as likely contributors to the heightened risk. While the study notes measurable changes in brain structure and neurocognitive functions, such as executive function and working memory, it emphasizes that clinical evidence specifically linking PMOS to Alzheimer's disease remains inconsistent.

Experts suggest that the focus for affected women should remain on optimizing metabolic health. Further research is required to determine how reproductive hormones specifically influence the development of Alzheimer's in those with PMOS.
