PMOS: Medical name change for PCOS officially implemented
The medical designation for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) has officially changed to PMOS, or Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome, effective May 2026. This renaming represents a shift in medical perspective to better reflect the complexity of the condition.
According to Dr. Alena Pichler of the Wunschbaby Institut Baden, the previous term was considered misleading because many patients do not actually possess cysts, but rather numerous small, normal follicles. Furthermore, the old name suggested the condition was limited to the ovaries.
The new name, PMOS, aims to provide a more comprehensive description. The term 'polyendocrine' acknowledges the involvement of multiple hormone systems, while 'metabolic' highlights the central role of metabolic disorders, such as insulin resistance. The 'ovarian' component remains to address essential features like irregular cycles and ovulation issues.
