PNL to Operate Under 2025 Statute and Plans New Congress After Court Suspends June Decisions
The Bucharest Tribunal has issued a provisional suspension of the decisions taken at the National Liberal Party (PNL) extraordinary congress on 21 June 2026, including the adoption of a new party statute and the election of a new leadership. PNL announced that it will continue to function under the statute adopted in July 2025, respecting the court’s interim measure while appealing the ruling. Party president Ilie Bolojan said the party will use all legal avenues to defend the will of its members and will not abandon the decisions of the congress. Senior party figures, including senator‑leader Daniel Fenechiu, indicated that a new congress will be convened, most likely in August or September, to adopt a revised statute designed to be less vulnerable to legal challenges. The leadership stressed that internal procedures will proceed despite the ongoing litigation, which could last from eight months to up to one and a half years. PNL also reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) legislation in Parliament. The party’s stance aims to maintain its operational continuity and political relevance while navigating the judicial dispute.
