Point of Law wins Geelong Cup to secure Melbourne Cup spot
Point of Law, a four-year-old horse formerly owned by King Charles III, has won the Geelong Cup, securing an automatic entry into the Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 3.
Jockey Ethan Brown rode the horse to victory in the Group 3 race over 2600 metres, finishing a half-length ahead of Small Fry and third-place finisher Omniman. Both runners were trained by Joseph O’Brien. The win marks the first Geelong Cup victory for trainer Ciaron Maher, who acquired the son of Frankel from the British royals earlier this year.
Point of Law is making his Australian debut after being prepared in quarantine at Werribee following his arrival from the UK. Maher noted the horse is highly progressive and appears capable of handling the two-mile distance required for the Melbourne Cup.
