Melbourne Cup qualification races

Overview

Several horses secured qualifications for the Melbourne Cup through key preparatory races in October 2026.

On October 17, the Bjorn Baker-trained horse So You Are won the St Leger Stakes at Randwick. Despite a brief disruption involving a gear check and an incident where trainer assistant Glen Lobb was shoved by the horse, jockey Tommy Berry led the $3.30 favourite to a three-quarter length victory over Tempesti.

On October 21, Point of Law, a four-year-old horse trained by Ciaron Maher, won the Geelong Cup. Ridden by Ethan Brown, the horse secured the Group 3 victory in its first Australian start, finishing ahead of Small Fry and Omniman to earn its place in the upcoming November race. Formerly owned by King Charles III, the son of Frankel was prepared in quarantine at Werribee following its arrival from the UK. Maher noted the horse is “highly progressive” and capable of handling the two-mile distance required for the Melbourne Cup.
