Pokémon announces new animated film ‘Wild Card’ for 2027

The Pokémon Company has announced a new animated feature film titled ‘Pokémon: Wild Card’, scheduled for a global theatrical release in 2027. The announcement was made during the closing ceremony of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco.

Departing from traditional narratives centered on Pokémon trainers, this film will focus on the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG). The story follows an aspiring competitive player, Mikiya, and his partner Pokémon, Mimikyu. A teaser trailer released alongside the announcement showcases a neon-lit urban setting and the central duo.

Production is being handled by the Japanese animation studio CloverWorks, known for ‘Spy x Family’. The film is directed by Katsuhiko Kitada, with character designs by Akemi Hayashi and planning/production by STORY inc. This marks the franchise’s first full-length animated theatrical film since 2020’s ‘Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle’.
