Łódź High-Speed Rail project advances with TBM assembly
Preparations for the High-Speed Rail (KDP) tunnel in Łódź have reached a critical milestone with the delivery and assembly of all components for the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). The machine, sourced from Herrenknecht in Germany, is being assembled at the Maratońska Street construction site.
This advanced TBM, which previously operated in the United States, is designed to handle highly variable geological conditions, including clay and water-saturated soils. The project, managed by PORR, aims to create a 4.5 to 4.6 km tunnel as part of the CPK infrastructure investment. Drilling is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2027, with the goal of having trains running through the tunnel by 2032.
Separately, construction continues on the S19 expressway between Rzeszów Południe and Babica. The TBM ‘Karpatka’ has completed 739 meters of the second tunnel bore, representing approximately 33 percent of its total length. This project has faced technical challenges due to the presence of methane in the geological area, requiring specialized technological adjustments.
