Poland advances nuclear energy plans with AP1000 and SMR projects

Poland is advancing its nuclear energy ambitions through both large-scale reactor projects and local small modular reactor (SMR) initiatives. Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe has released visual documentation for its planned nuclear power plant, which will utilize three Westinghouse AP1000 reactors. Each unit is expected to have a capacity of 1250 MW. The design features a modular infrastructure and a cooling system that utilizes seawater directly, which aims to eliminate the need for large cooling towers and minimize the impact on the coastal landscape.

On a local level, the city of Stalowa Wola is pursuing the implementation of SMR technology, specifically the BWRX-300 reactor design. Local officials aim to have the first SMR operational by the first half of the 2030s. This project is intended to attract investors and specialists while providing stable energy and heat supplies through the use of waste heat. The BWRX-300 technology is currently being developed and deployed in several countries, including Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Sweden.
