Poland nuclear energy development
Overview
Poland is advancing its nuclear energy strategy through a combination of large-scale reactor projects and small modular reactor (SMR) initiatives. Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) has released visual documentation for a planned power plant utilizing three Westinghouse AP1000 reactors, each with a 1250 MW capacity. Concurrently, local efforts such as those in Stalowa Wola are targeting the deployment of BWRX-300 SMR technology by the first half of the 2030s. Private sector involvement has intensified with a group of Polish entrepreneurs investing 500 million PLN into Synthos Green Energy to support the development of BWRX-300 technology. This domestic funding, which includes notable figures such as Rafał Brzoska and Michał Sołowow, complements existing foreign investment and a 2027 government budget draft that allocates 8 billion PLN to recapitalize the construction of the nation’s first large-scale nuclear plant. As of October 2026, PEJ has initiated the procurement of long-lead components for the first reactor of the inaugural plant located in the Choczewo municipality. This phase includes ordering critical elements of the nuclear island, such as structural modules and the reactor containment vessel. The project is being managed by a consortium of Westinghouse and Bechtel, with the French company Arabelle, part of the EDF group, slated to provide turbines and generators. The first reactor is scheduled to begin operations in 2036, with subsequent units following in 2037 and 2038. Preliminary site preparations and geological studies are currently underway in the Lubiatowo-Kopalino area. To support these developments, the Polish government is preparing amendments to the nuclear special act to reduce administrative and legal barriers. Proposed changes include removing the 10-year expiration limit on location decisions, simplifying real estate and permit procedures, and adjusting financing schedules to better align with investment needs.
