Poland rolls out major road expansions and railway project
Poland’s transport authorities have signed contracts and begun work on a series of large‑scale infrastructure upgrades. The first segment of the A2 motorway between Warsaw and Łódź will be widened to three lanes per direction, with a 3‑km stretch widened to four lanes, in a 257 million‑zł project led by Strabag. A separate expansion of road 583 between the Łódź region and the village of Model will add a new carriageway, sidewalks, a bike path and a roundabout over a 6.4‑km stretch, costing about 68 million zł.
Regional road projects include the N‑S corridor in Ruda Śląska, where foundations for new overpasses are under construction, and the construction of a 2‑km pedestrian‑bicycle trail in Tuszyn funded by EU regional funds. Smaller municipal initiatives see a 30 km/h traffic‑calming zone introduced in the Gołąbki district and a new bike‑pedestrian path in Kolbuszowa costing over 3 million zł.
On the rail side, PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe have launched a tender for the final 16‑km, double‑track segment of the Podłęże‑Piekiełko line between Gdów and Szczyrzyc. The section, valued at roughly 2.5 billion zł, will include two tunnels, multiple viaducts and a new station at Szczyrzyc, aiming to cut travel times between Kraków, Nowy Sącz and Zakopane.
Other notable investments include a new 100 million‑zł Baumit factory in Zimna Wódka, a 10 million‑zł cycling network in Rzeszów, and a 3.5 million‑zł road improvement in Cekcyn. Together they represent a coordinated push to improve road safety, capacity and sustainable mobility across the country.
