Poland and Germany advance 'Shield East' defence project

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that troops from Poland and Germany are jointly carrying out engineering work on the eastern border as part of the national defence programme "Shield East" (Tarcza Wschód). The Polish General Staff released a video showing Bundeswehr engineering units deployed alongside the Polish 16th Mechanised Division to build fortifications, barriers and counter‑mobility infrastructure on NATO’s north‑eastern flank.

The programme, funded with 10 billion złoty for the 2024‑2028 period, aims to strengthen Poland’s border against the threat posed by Russia. Polish officials said reconnaissance missions with French and U.S. forces are planned for the autumn, while German participation is described as a concrete example of NATO cooperation.
