Poland and Hungary tighten waste collection rules from July 1

From July 1, 2024 Poland will ban the use of any plastic or “biodegradable” bags for bio‑waste in several regions, including Poznań, Gdynia and Leszno. Households that violate the rule risk a collective fine for the entire building, and authorities warn that bags labelled “BIO” often are not compostable.

At the same time, Veszprém city in Hungary and waste‑service firm Depónia will cease the separate collection of paper and plastic. Both materials will be placed in the same container, with new unified labeling and additional 1,100‑liter bins installed across apartment blocks. The change is intended to reduce collection trips, noise and fuel use while simplifying recycling for residents.
