Poland and Ukraine nearing MiG-29 jet for drone technology deal

Poland and Ukraine are nearing a final agreement to exchange military equipment. Under the proposed deal, Poland would transfer MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine in return for a significant quantity of Ukrainian drone technology, unmanned aerial systems, and combat expertise.

Negotiations had previously stalled due to disagreements over the fulfillment of obligations, but discussions have reportedly regained momentum. Some reports suggest the exchange could include up to 1,500 drones. The transfer of the aging MiG-29 fleet is expected to occur within the next few weeks.

Separately, President Volodymyr Zelensky is seeking increased support for air defense, specifically requesting more interceptor missiles for MIM-104 Patriot systems to protect urban areas from Russian strikes. While discussions regarding Patriot missiles are ongoing, Polish officials have noted that any such transfer would likely require a broader international coalition and high-level government decisions.
