Poland and Ukraine nearing MiG-29 swap for drone tech

Overview

As of 20 August 2026, negotiations between Poland and Ukraine regarding a military equipment exchange have regained momentum. The proposed deal involves Poland transferring retired MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine in exchange for Ukrainian drone technology, unmanned aerial systems, and combat expertise, with some reports suggesting the exchange could include up to 1,500 drones. The physical transfer of the MiG-29 fleet is expected within the coming weeks.

In response to parliamentary inquiries, the Polish Ministry of National Defence stated it has not conducted analytical work regarding the conversion of retiring MiG-29 aircraft into unmanned combat drones or decoys.

Regarding Poland’s broader modernization, the Ministry noted that the Armed Forces Development Program for 2025–2039 aims to maintain several squadrons of fourth and fifth-generation aircraft. To date, three F-35 jets have been delivered to Poland, with 14 more expected by the end of 2026, as part of a contract for 32 aircraft scheduled for completion by 2029.

Concurrently, President Volodymyr Zelensky continues to seek increased air defense support, specifically requesting more interceptor missiles for MIM-104 Patriot systems. While discussions regarding the potential transfer of Polish PAC-3 MSE Patriot missiles are ongoing, Polish officials maintain that such a move would likely require high-level government decisions and the formation of a broader international coalition.
