Poland and Ukraine negotiate MiG‑29 fighter swap for drone technology

Poland and Ukraine are in talks to exchange Poland's aging MiG‑29 fighter jets for Ukrainian drone technology. Ukrainian war veteran Olexiy Hetman has criticised the proposal, arguing the aircraft should be transferred to Ukraine without any demand for drone technology in return.

Polish Deputy Defence Minister Magdalena Sobkowiak‑Czarnecka confirmed that Ukraine has submitted a concrete offer outlining the exchange, while Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz said Poland could assist with modernising the jets but any refurbishment costs should be borne by Ukraine or allied states. Poland does not intend to pay for potential repairs.

The negotiations also touch on broader cooperation, including a joint drone‑production programme with Ukrainian firm TAF Industries. Concerns were raised about possible involvement of Bulgaria, whose government is perceived as close to Russia, and the risk that transferred equipment could indirectly benefit Russian forces.
