Poland and Ukraine relations face social and political strain

Relations between Poland and Ukraine are facing increasing pressure due to social, historical, and political tensions. While Poland has been a major supporter of Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, experts note a shift in the social climate.

Phil Bednarczyk, director of the German Marshall Fund’s Warsaw office, observed that the initial spike in social support seen in February 2022 has faced wear from the prolonged nature of the war. Political factors and the perceived economic burdens on Polish society have provided opportunities for politicians to challenge the level of support.

Yuriy Boyechko, CEO of the nonprofit Hope for Ukraine, noted that many refugees expressed a desire to return to Ukraine as the social climate in Poland changes. Despite these strains, experts emphasize that Ukraine’s defense remains a critical security buffer for Poland and that Ukrainian residents continue to contribute to the Polish economy.
