Overview

Relations between Poland and Ukraine are experiencing increasing social, political, and historical strain. While Poland remains a major supporter of Ukraine against the Russian invasion, the prolonged nature of the conflict has caused a shift in the social climate. Friction intensified following President Volodymyr Zelensky’s decision to name a military unit after the ‘Heroes of the UPA’—the armed wing of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists—and his decision to re-inter OUN leader Andriy Melnyk with military honors. In response, Polish President Karol Nawrocki revoked the Order of the White Eagle award previously granted to Zelensky.

These historical disputes are becoming significant political tools in Poland. The populist-nationalist right opposition is utilizing these issues to challenge the centrist government, including questioning military aid transfers such as Patriot interceptor missiles. Experts anticipate that disputes regarding historical justice, specifically concerning the Volhynia massacres, will be a major factor in the Polish parliamentary elections scheduled for October 2027.
