Poland and Vienna negotiate monument for King Jan III Sobieski

The Polish Ambassador to Austria, Zenon Kosiniak-Kamysz, is renewing calls for a dignified monument to King Jan III Sobieski on Vienna’s Kahlenberg hill. The site marks where the Polish monarch led the relief forces during the 1683 Battle of Vienna against the Ottoman Empire.

Despite a cornerstone being laid in 2013, a permanent monument has yet to be erected, leaving only an empty pedestal. The Ambassador has rejected the idea that the existing pedestal alone constitutes sufficient commemoration, stating he would not lay a wreath upon it. While Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig has described ongoing discussions as constructive, no specific design or timeline has been established.

The dispute also carries social and political dimensions. The Ambassador noted that the lack of an official monument allows far-right groups to attempt to co-opt the historical legacy of the event. He emphasized that the effort to honor Sobieski is not anti-Turkish or anti-Muslim, noting that members of the Turkish religious community in Austria participated in recent official commemorations at the Polish National Sanctuary.
