Poland bans bio‑waste bags in homes, penalties may affect whole blocks

From 1 July 2026 new regulations will prohibit the use of any plastic, biodegradable or compostable bags for bio‑waste in brown containers across parts of Poland, starting with the Leszno region. Residents must place organic waste – such as fruit peels, coffee grounds, wilted flowers and egg shells – directly into the container without any packaging.

Local housing cooperatives and municipal authorities have begun issuing notices warning that improper segregation may trigger higher waste‑removal charges for the entire building, not just the individual responsible. Similar bans are already in force in cities such as Poznań, Gdynia, Mosina and Serock, where officials cite the difficulty of processing bagged waste and the risk of plastic contamination.

The stricter enforcement aims to improve the efficiency of waste treatment facilities and reduce plastic pollution in the organic waste stream. Authorities plan more intensive inspections and information campaigns to help residents adapt to the new practice.
