Poland bans plastic bags for bio‑waste, forcing loose disposal from July 2026
Effective 1 July 2026, the Komunalny Związek Gmin Regionu Leszczyńskiego (KZGRL) will prohibit placing bio‑waste in any plastic bag, including those marked “bio” or “biodegradable”. Residents must deposit bio‑waste loose into brown containers. Violations can be treated as a lack of segregation, triggering higher waste‑collection fees for the entire building, with charges potentially rising to two‑ to four‑times the basic rate.
The rule mirrors measures already adopted in several Polish cities—Poznań, Gdynia, Mosina, Serock and the Pilski Region—where bio‑waste must also be thrown in without bags. Local housing cooperatives, such as Gostyńska Spółdzielnia Mieszkaniowa, have begun issuing warnings after discovering waste in plastic bags, emphasizing that even biodegradable‑labelled bags are not permitted. Authorities advise residents to verify municipal regulations and avoid using plastic or biodegradable bags to prevent fines and increased fees.
