Poland begins component orders for first nuclear power plant
Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) has initiated the procurement of long-lead components for the first reactor of Poland’s inaugural nuclear power plant. This phase involves ordering critical elements of the nuclear island, including structural modules and the reactor containment vessel.
The project, located in the Choczewo municipality, will feature three Westinghouse AP1000 reactors. The construction is being managed by a consortium of Westinghouse and Bechtel, while the French company Arabelle, part of the EDF group, is slated to provide turbines and generators.
Ordering these complex, heavy-engineered components—such as pressure vessel forgings and castings—well in advance is a standard practice to secure production capacity and mitigate project delays. The first reactor is scheduled to begin operations in 2036, with the second and third units following in 2037 and 2038, respectively. Preliminary site preparations and geological studies are currently underway in the Lubiatowo-Kopalino area.
