Poland blocks EU plan to force rapid electric‑vehicle fleet transition

At an EU Transport Council meeting in Luxembourg, a coalition of member states led by Poland halted the European Commission’s proposal to accelerate the replacement of corporate vehicle fleets with electric cars. The plan, which aimed to lower the emissions target from 100% to 90% by the mid‑2020s, was deemed too fast‑paced. Infrastructure minister Dariusz Klimczak said the green transition must be "reasonable and based on market realities", and Poland may also seek to keep a larger share of conventional‑engine cars on the road after 2035.

Polish policymakers are simultaneously stressing the need for a modern, qualified energy workforce to achieve EU climate targets and maintain energy independence. The Integrated Qualification System and the updated Sectoral Qualification Framework for Energy define over 600 specific competencies – including 386 green skills – to guide training, recruitment and digitalisation in the renewable‑energy shift.
