Poland blocks MiCA rollout while Hungary lifts crypto crackdown

Poland’s president, Karol Nawrocki, exercised a veto that halted the implementation of the EU’s MiCA crypto‑regulation framework, citing concerns over domain‑blocking powers, high supervisory fees and detailed rules. The decision adds uncertainty for Polish crypto firms as the EU transition period ends on July 1, with only a few platforms holding full MiCA licences.

In Hungary, Prime Minister Péter Márki announced the removal of criminalisation provisions for crypto assets, describing the previous rules as “severely flawed, disproportionate and market‑destroying.” He added that the earlier approach “was not consumer protection but a severe market restriction, rendering an entire innovative market inoperable.” The policy shift follows an EU infringement procedure against Hungary and aims to restore a proportional, predictable regulatory environment.

Both countries’ moves reflect ongoing tensions within the EU over balancing consumer safeguards with the competitiveness of the emerging blockchain sector.
