Poland is advancing its Eastern Shield program to fortify its borders with Russia and Belarus. The initiative involves constructing a multi-layered defense system, including trenches, barbed wire, and concrete anti-tank obstacles known as 'hedgehogs'.

Polish and German soldiers have recently spent five weeks working on these fortifications. The project, which aims to secure approximately 210 kilometers of the border with the Russian Kaliningrad region, includes reconnaissance systems, drone defense equipment, and military logistics warehouses. Poland is also prepared to mine the border within 48 hours if a conflict arises.

Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that approximately 10 billion euros have been allocated to the Eastern Shield. Poland currently spends roughly five percent of its GDP on defense. The strategy also incorporates natural terrain, such as marshlands, to act as additional barriers against military hardware.
