Poland butter prices plunge to multi-year low

In May 2026 the average price of a 200‑gram block of butter in Polish supermarkets fell to 4.92 zł, the cheapest level recorded in years. A year earlier the same product cost 7.62 zł. After a sharp spike in late 2024, when prices peaked at 8.99 zł in December, the market stabilised in 2025 with prices between 7.33 zł and 8.14 zł. Early 2026 saw a rapid decline, reaching 5.45 zł in April before hitting the May minimum.

Analysts attribute the drop to lower energy and processing costs, a rebound in EU milk supply, and a renewed aggressive promotional strategy by major discount retailers. Retail expert Robert Biegaj of Shopfully Poland noted, “Butter has not been this cheap in years,” and explained that stores are using low‑priced butter as a magnet to draw shoppers.

Seasonal patterns suggest prices will stay low through the summer, but demand is expected to rise in the autumn and before the holidays, potentially pushing prices back to 6‑7 zł per block by year‑end.
