Poland food market pressure, inflation eases, rates cut
Entities: Agnieszka Łopatka · Marcin Luzinski · Erste Bank
Overview
By late July 2026 Poland’s food market remained under strain from inexpensive South‑American beef and low‑margin Mercosur chicken, while pork prices faced headwinds from high feed costs, African swine fever and possible collusion. Butter prices fell below 2 zł as EU milk surpluses and reduced Chinese imports eased supply, and Atlantic cod had largely replaced Baltic cod on the coast at about 150 zł/kg. Coffee futures surged after El Niño‑related weather disrupted Brazil’s harvest, prompting discount retailers to promote low‑price iced‑coffee makers and beans. Cross‑border price differentials intensified: Czech shoppers continued to travel to Poland for butter, meat and bakery items up to 40 % cheaper, with a test showing a pack of butter 85 zł cheaper. The Czech agriculture minister announced an analysis of EU rules that could ban sales below purchase price, citing consumer‑price impacts. In Poland, a regional agricultural council reported a 17.3 % drop in retail sugar versus a 2.6 % rise in Germany, suspecting dumping and seeking a formal investigation. June’s Retail Store Price Index showed consumer prices 2.7 % higher year‑on‑year, driven by household chemicals (+6.1 %), bread (+5.3 %), sweets (+5.2 %) and personal‑hygiene (+5.1 %). Fish (+4.5 %) rose as ocean‑temperature shifts reduced supply, while fats, food additives and dairy fell. Analysts expect price pressure to stabilise at a higher level rather than revert. Wholesale diesel in Poland climbed by roughly 45 zł per 100 L, lifting retail gasoline to about 7.29 zł/L and diesel to 7.64 zł/L. Transport firms report fuel now accounting for around 30 % of costs, eroding margins as freight rates decline, adding further pressure on logistics for food commodities.
