Poland can field only two land divisions against a potential Russian attack

Poland maintains six land divisions, but only the 16th and 18th Mechanized Divisions are classified as tier‑1 units that could engage in combat within a week, and even they have not completed formation of all sub‑units. The other two newly created divisions – the 1st Legion Infantry and the 8th Home Army Infantry – remain in the formation stage and are not ready for combat. Two western‑based divisions, the 11th Lubusz Armoured Cavalry and the 12th Szczecin Mechanised Division, are only partially staffed and would need between two weeks and a month to achieve full combat capability. Polish defence officials, citing General Wiesław Kukuła, describe the readiness gaps and note that the two tier‑1 divisions are positioned near the Russian Kaliningrad enclave and the Belarusian border. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitrij Pieskow dismissed media speculation about a Russian provocation as “scare tactics.” The Telegraph reported that the United States warned Poland about possible limited Russian or Belarusian actions designed to test NATO responses, including potential missile, drone or hybrid attacks.
