Poland can field only two mechanized divisions in the first days of a war with Russia

General Roman Polko told Radio Zet that if Russia attacked Poland today, only the 16th and 18th Mechanized Divisions would be ready to fight, and even they have not completed all new unit formations. Poland officially has six land divisions, but the 1st Legion Infantry Division and the 8th Home Army Infantry Division are still being formed, while the 11th and 12th divisions are only partially staffed and would need several weeks to become combat‑effective.

Analysts cited by Rzeczpospolita note that tier‑1 (first‑strike) units can be deployed within a week, whereas tier‑2 units require up to 30 days to fill personnel gaps. The remaining western divisions are expected to reach full readiness only by around 2040. Polko also criticised the deployment of troops to monitor railway infrastructure and other non‑defence tasks, and he discussed plans for a permanent U.S. base near Poznań.
