Poland clarifies tap water safety and private well regulations

Dr Maria Kasprzak explains that tap water supplied by public networks in Poland meets Polish and EU standards, but its quality can be affected by the condition of local pipes. After repairs, water may appear reddish and should be avoided until it clears. The water is disinfected and rarely contaminated; however, vulnerable groups such as children, the ill, and immunocompromised individuals may prefer boiled water. While bottled water offers convenience, it raises concerns about plastic waste and possible bisphenol leaching.

A new law that took effect on 16 September 2025 obliges municipalities to guarantee uninterrupted water supply for at least three days during emergencies. The legislation does not impose new duties on private well owners; instead, local authorities remain responsible for providing drinking water to residents. Municipalities may enter agreements with private well owners to incorporate their wells into emergency supply systems, but any such inclusion is decided locally and is not funded by the national government.
