Poland commemorates victims of Soviet-era deportations

Commemorative events are being held across Poland to honor Poles deported to Siberia, Kazakhstan, and Central Asia by Soviet forces.

In Warsaw, a memorial plaque was unveiled at the Stare Powązki Cemetery near the Church of St. Charles Borromeo. The initiative, led by repatriates and descendants of the deported, aims to provide a permanent symbolic site for those forcibly removed from their homeland. The unveiling precedes the 90th anniversary of the mass deportations in 2026. The project received support from the Institute of National Remembrance.

In Toruń, ceremonies for Siberian Exile Day include a Holy Mass and a gathering at the Siberian Exile monument at the VI General Secondary School. Local commemorations also feature the Exile Run at Barbarka, part of ongoing efforts by schools and the Siberian Exile Association to preserve the history of the hundreds of thousands of people affected by Soviet repressions starting in 1940.
