Commemorations of communist-era repression in Poland
Overview
Poland is conducting various commemorative events to honor victims of communist and Soviet-era repressions.
In mid-September 2026, activities included the 21st Memory Run, a 300 km pilgrimage connecting the Wujek Coal Mine to the grave of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko. Ceremonies also marked the 80th anniversary of the execution of National Armed Forces (NSZ) soldiers targeted by the NKVD and the Ministry of Public Security during operations such as ‘Lawina’. Karol Nawrocki stated that honoring these anti-communist resistance fighters serves as a sign of Poland’s independence.
Simultaneously, commemorations have focused on Poles deported to Siberia, Kazakhstan, and Central Asia by Soviet forces. In Warsaw, a memorial plaque was unveiled at the Stare Powązki Cemetery to mark the upcoming 90th anniversary of mass deportations. In Toruń, Siberian Exile Day was observed with Holy Mass and gatherings at local monuments, supported by the Siberian Exile Association to preserve the history of those affected by Soviet repressions beginning in 1940.
