Poland confirms legality of non-cash recycling incentives

Poland's Ministry of Climate and Environment has confirmed the legality of reverse vending machines (RVM) that offer ecological incentives instead of cash. This follows reports of a machine at Kraków-Balice Airport that offers to plant a tree in exchange for 20 empty containers rather than providing a monetary refund or discount coupon.

The Ministry stated that Polish law does not prohibit running separate packaging collection systems alongside the official national deposit system. This allows entities to install machines for selective collection within their own spaces.

In a related development regarding the national deposit system, which has seen 3.2 billion containers returned, the operator Kaucja.pl has launched a specialized map. The tool helps users locate collection points specifically operated by Kaucja.pl, though it does not include all available machines in the country. The operator plans to expand the map and eventually include real-time data on machine capacity.
