Poland debates alcohol advertising and sales restrictions

Debates regarding alcohol regulation in Poland are unfolding at both the national and local levels. On a national scale, legal expert and University of Warsaw professor Krzysztof Koźmiński argues that restricting beer advertising is a calculated health policy cost rather than a threat to sports. While opponents cite a potential loss of approximately 100 million PLN annually for sports clubs and associations, Koźmiński maintains that sports organizations do not have a natural right to brewery sponsorship and that such changes are not unprecedented in countries like France, Norway, or Iceland.

Locally, in Włodawa, a proposal by councilman Krzysztof Steć has sparked discussion regarding nighttime alcohol prohibition. Steć suggests limiting the sale of alcohol for off-site consumption during night hours to improve public safety, reduce vandalism, and decrease noise. Mayor Wiesław Muszyński expressed caution, noting that while local governments have the authority to implement such bans, any regulation restricting business activities must be preceded by a thorough analysis of its social and economic impacts on local entrepreneurs.
