Poland debates return of mandatory military conscription

The debate regarding the return of mandatory military conscription in Poland has intensified due to security threats from Russia. Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka, Deputy Minister of National Defence, expressed her personal support for reinstating conscription and suggested that women should also undergo military training, citing models used in neighboring and Scandinavian countries. However, she clarified that this is her personal view and not the official position of the government, noting that various options are being discussed within the Ministry.

Former GROM commander General Roman Polko argued against mandatory conscription at this time, stating that there is currently a high number of volunteers willing to undergo training. He emphasized the need for a strategic plan to determine who should be trained and for what purpose, rather than relying on mass mobilization.

Other political figures, such as Confederation leader Sławomir Mentzen, have advocated for mass mobilization as a necessity for national defense, drawing parallels to the Ukrainian experience. Critics of this approach argue that mechanical application of foreign models ignores Poland's unique geopolitical situation and potential social resistance to forced service.
