Poland expands volunteer training and mobilisation
Overview
In mid-August 2026, the Polish Ministry of National Defence updated mobilization regulations to enhance state potential during serious crises or war. A key component is a new courier system utilizing municipal employees, police, or postal workers to deliver mobilization notices to reserves within hours during official mobilization or martial law. These updated rules may also affect Polish citizens living permanently in countries such as Germany, Norway, or the United Kingdom.
Parallel to these regulatory shifts, recruitment and training initiatives continue. The Military Recruitment Center in Lublin has announced the eighth term of Voluntary Basic Military Service, scheduled from 28 September to 24 October 2026. The 2nd Lublin Territorial Defence Brigade (WOT) recently welcomed 200 volunteers for its ‘Vacations with WOT’ project, bringing the total number of trainees for the project to nearly 390. These participants focus on weapons handling, tactics, and field medicine.
Specialized training is also being conducted for security forces; approximately 30 counter-terrorism officers from various units, including those from Lublin, Kielce, Radom, Łódź, and Warsaw, participated in exercises in the Bieszczady region. Organized by the Rzeszów Counter-Terrorism Unit, these exercises focused on ‘green tactics’ in open terrain, involving reconnaissance and night operations.
To further prepare for potential crises, Military Recruitment Centers are issuing mobilization cards to military reserves and civilians with essential specialized skills. These cards use color-coded stripes: red for immediate reporting, green for those called up following an official summons, and blue for employee mobilization assignments. The Ministry has clarified that receiving these documents is a standard peacetime preparation and does not signify the start of mobilization. However, officials have issued warnings regarding a wave of disinformation involving AI-generated images of fake mobilization documents circulating online.
