Poland divided over potential return of mandatory military conscription

A recent Opinia24 poll commissioned by RMF FM reveals a significant divide among Polish citizens regarding the reinstatement of mandatory military service, which has been suspended since 2009.

Approximately 48 percent of respondents support returning to compulsory service. Within this group, 22 percent believe the obligation should apply to both men and women, while 24 percent believe it should apply only to men. Conversely, 38 percent of those surveyed oppose the return to conscription, favoring the maintenance of a fully professional army.

Demographic analysis shows that opposition is strongest among young people aged 18-24, with 53 percent against the idea. Resistance is also higher among individuals with secondary (44 percent) and higher (45 percent) education. Additionally, 47 percent of voters from the Civic Coalition (Koalicja Obywatelska) support maintaining the current professional military model.
