Poland Education Minister signs new school grading and homework regulations

Polish Minister of National Education Barbara Nowacka has signed an amendment to regulations governing the assessment, classification, and promotion of students in public schools.

The new rules introduce significant changes to homework policies for grades IV–VIII of primary schools. Practical and technical homework to be completed during free time, such as art drawings or technical crafts, is now prohibited. Written homework must focus exclusively on reinforcing, developing, or applying knowledge acquired during lessons. Furthermore, teachers are required to check every piece of written homework and provide students with appropriate feedback.

Schools may now allow students to improve their annual classification grades by completing optional written homework, provided this option is included in the school's internal statutes. The amendment also updates the criteria for behavioral grades, focusing on areas such as fulfilling student duties, showing respect to others, taking responsibility for personal development, following social norms, and maintaining proper language and safety standards.

Additionally, technical and vocational school students may be exempt from certain school-based driving preparation classes if they provide certification of completing such training outside of school.
