Poland ends tolls on A4 Krakow–Katowice highway as state assumes control

Poland's government will take over the A4 motorway segment between Kraków and Katowice when the concession held by private operator Stalexport expires on the night of 15‑16 March 2027. The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) will assume management, dismantle the toll gates at Balice and Mysłowice and eliminate fees for passenger cars up to 3.5 t, while trucks will continue to pay via the e‑TOLL system.

Preparations for a major upgrade are already under way. The tender for design work on a 24‑km stretch between Dulowa and Balice attracted 13 bidders, and the project will add a third traffic lane to increase capacity for the over 50 000 vehicles that use the corridor daily. The lane expansion is scheduled for 2030‑2033 after documentation and approvals are completed.
