Poland enforces new helmet rule for under‑16 electric scooter riders

Poland has introduced mandatory helmet use for anyone younger than 16 who rides an electric scooter, effective from 3 June 2026. The rule also applies to bicycles, e‑bikes and other personal transport devices used by minors. While riders aged 16 and above are not legally required to wear helmets, authorities strongly recommend their use.

The regulation comes as electric scooters become a common summer transport option for children and teenagers, leading to a rise in road incidents involving the vehicles. Safety guidelines stress that scooters must be in good technical condition, equipped with functioning brakes and lights, and limited to a maximum speed of 20 km/h (30 km/h speed limit on public roads). Riders should stay on bike lanes or marked paths, obey traffic signs, and avoid carrying passengers or cargo. Parents are urged to supervise young users, ensure proper helmet fit, and promote cautious riding, especially in crowded or slippery conditions.

The new measures aim to reduce head injuries and improve overall road safety for young road users during the holiday season and beyond.
