Poland expands access to free prenatal and breast cancer screenings

Public health programs in Poland are expanding access to various diagnostic screenings. As of June 2024, the National Health Fund (NFZ) has extended free prenatal testing to all pregnant women, regardless of age, removing previous restrictions that primarily targeted women over 35. These screenings, which require a doctor's referral, include biochemical tests and fetal ultrasounds to assess developmental health.

In addition to prenatal care, the NFZ is facilitating breast cancer prevention through a mammography program for women aged 45 to 74. This program offers free screenings every two years via stationary clinics and mobile mammography units (mammobuses) to increase accessibility in smaller towns and rural areas. Patients can schedule appointments through the central e-registration system via their Internet Patient Account.
