Cancer screening initiatives and healthcare reforms in PL
Overview
Health authorities in Poland continue to promote free preventive screening programs to improve cancer detection rates. The National Health Fund (NFZ) provides cervical cancer detection for women aged 25 to 64 and breast cancer prevention via mammography every two years for women aged 45 to 74. To expand reach, the Nie Warto Foundation is launching the 13th edition of the Mosznowładcy campaign, aiming to provide free testicular ultrasounds and PSA prostate health tests to over 10,000 men across 21 cities.
Despite these efforts, Poland faces a significant public health challenge: while the country has one of the lowest rates of new breast cancer diagnoses in the EU, it has the highest mortality rate from the disease. This is attributed to late diagnoses. Recent data highlights low participation: over the last two years, only 32.77% of eligible women utilized mammography programs, and only 15.22% utilized cervical cancer screening (HPV HR testing). Additionally, approximately 15% of eligible individuals participated in colorectal cancer screening via colonoscopy in 2025.
In response to these low rates, the Polish Ministry of Health launched a nationwide campaign titled ‘Profilaktyka – podaj dalej’ (Prevention – pass it on). Supported by government departments and local authorities, the initiative encourages citizens to advocate for medical check-ups among family and friends. Health experts note that many citizens avoid regular check-ups due to fear of diagnosis. As of August 2026, the digital scheduling system via the MojeIKP application offered over 384,000 mammography appointments and more than 445,000 HPV HR testing appointments.
Other ongoing reforms include the expansion of free prenatal testing to all pregnant women regardless of age and the continued deployment of mobile ‘mammobuses’ to increase accessibility in rural areas.
