Poland expands CANARD traffic‑monitoring network with new speed‑check sections and over 700 devices

The Centre for Automatic Road Traffic Supervision (CANARD) has added roughly 83 km of new sectional speed‑measurement (OPP) sites on major corridors A1, A4 and express roads S5‑S8. These sections impose an 80 km/h limit for heavy trucks and are intended to improve safety on high‑traffic routes linking ports, major cities and the Czech border.

Since its launch in 2011, CANARD’s system now comprises more than 700 monitoring devices: 545 stationary speed cameras, 116 point‑to‑point speed‑measurement units, 55 red‑light cameras, eight railway‑road crossing monitors and additional mobile units. In the first quarter of 2026 the network recorded over 344 000 violations, a 29 % increase from the comparable period in 2025. Fines collected contributed more than 164 million PLN to the National Road Fund and 73 million PLN to the Bus Transport Development Fund. The eBOK portal digitises enforcement, with about one‑fifth of penalties processed electronically and the fastest issuance time of 57 seconds.
