Sweden to deploy Patriot systems to Poland to protect NATO logistics hub

Sweden has announced the deployment of Patriot air defense systems and approximately 100 soldiers to Poland, scheduled to begin on December 1. The mission aims to protect the NATO logistics hub at Rzeszów-Jasionka airport, a critical transit point for military and civilian aid flowing to Ukraine. This deployment will replace a Dutch unit and is expected to continue through the first half of 2027.

In addition to the Patriot systems, Sweden is already contributing Gripen fighter jets to NATO airspace surveillance missions in Poland. Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz welcomed the move, noting the strategic importance of securing the Lublin region and the eastern flank.

Separately, Lithuania is intensifying its war preparations. Interior Minister Martynas Katelynas stated that in a conflict scenario, up to one million refugees from the Baltic states could require evacuation to Poland. To facilitate this, a special refugee center is being established in Lozdijai, Lithuania, near the Polish border.
