Poland is undergoing a major military expansion to build what officials describe as the largest land army in Europe. Driven by the perception of Russia as an existential threat following the invasion of Ukraine, Warsaw is shifting its procurement strategy toward domestic and Central European manufacturers to ensure supply chain resilience and reduce reliance on distant international suppliers.

Defense spending from domestic and regional companies has nearly quadrupled since 2022, reaching approximately 30.4 billion zlotys (7 billion euros) last year. For 2024, Poland is expected to spend roughly 53 billion euros on core defense expenditures, which represents about 4.7% of its GDP. This places Poland as the fourth-highest spender in the EU, trailing only France, Italy, and Germany.

While the country continues to acquire advanced American systems such as F-35 fighter jets, Abrams tanks, and Patriot missile batteries, there is an increasing emphasis on the regional production of high-consumption battlefield equipment, including drones, ammunition, and armored vehicles. Long-term strategic goals include expanding the armed forces from the current 220,000 personnel to a target of 500,000 troops by 2039.
