Poland explores mental health support and professional farm replacement systems

The Agricultural Social Insurance Fund (KRUS) is addressing the mental health and operational challenges faced by Polish farmers. Through its “Farmer Wellbeing” campaign, KRUS is highlighting the increased risk of depression among agricultural workers, who face chronic stress, social isolation, and long working hours. Globally, depression affects approximately 280 million people, and in Poland, about 1.5 million patients use antidepressants.

To mitigate these pressures, KRUS and the Ministry of Agriculture are analyzing the implementation of a professional farm replacement system. This initiative aims to provide formal assistance to farmers during periods of illness, hospitalization, or vacation, ensuring farm operations continue without relying solely on family or neighbors. The proposal draws inspiration from European models, such as Austria’s Betriebshilfe system, which has provided professional farm assistance and subsidies since 1974.
