Polish agricultural social insurance and welfare issues
Overview
Polish farmers are facing various challenges regarding social insurance and occupational welfare. Initial reports highlighted difficulties in securing compensation from the Agricultural Social Insurance Fund (KRUS) for occupational diseases, such as Lyme disease. Lawmaker Tadeusz Woźniak noted a gap between medical diagnoses and the granting of benefits, particularly when infections are diagnosed late. Additionally, strict requirements for agricultural pensions remain a concern for workers.
Efforts to support the agricultural community have expanded to include mental health and operational stability. Through the “Farmer Wellbeing” campaign, KRUS has addressed the high risk of depression among farmers caused by stress and isolation. To further support farmers during illness or leave, the KRUS and the Ministry of Agriculture are exploring a professional farm replacement system, modeled after European systems, to ensure continuous farm operations.
